The R-44 is a compact, four channel, solid-state field recorder that uses SD or large capacity SDHC cards as the storage media enabling quiet and reliable recording for a variety of professional audio needs. Capture up to 4 channels of uncompressed audio with selectable bit depths (16-bit or 24-bit) and sampling frequencies (44.1kHz/48kHz/88.2kHz/96kHz/192kHz). The Edirol R-44 is designed for professional use within a very conveniently sized package. Capture up to 4 channels of uncompressed audio with selectable bit depths (16-bit or 24-bit) and sampling frequencies(44.1kHz/48kHz/88.2kHz/96kHz). R-44 employs SD cards or large capacity SDHC cards as the recording media. No moving parts enables the most silent and reliable operation possible.

Built-in limiter, low-cut filter and studio class effects
An on-board limiter helps suppress sudden peaks in sound from an input source. A low-cut filter is included to help prevent things like wind noise or mic handling noise. Studio class effects such as 3-Band EQ, 6-Band GEQ, Enhancer or DeEsser can be used as tools to greatly improve audio quality. Effects can be applied while recording or simply for monitoring/playback.

Pre-Record function ensures you never miss that important moment again
The Pre-Record function buffers input signals for a user-definable amount of time. When the REC button is pressed, the material from the previous few seconds (selectable) is included. This also helps reduce sound bites at the beginning of a recording by not having to start the recorder too early.

Combo type analog jacks and digital output enables connection with a variety of devices
The combo input jacks (4) supports the connection of both XLR and 1/4 inch plugs. XLR inputs are equipped with phantom power. Eleven steps of input sensitivity enable the connection of various devices with a variety of inputs levels from microphones to musical instruments. High quality analog circuitry in the preamp ensures superior recording results.


High-contrast Organic LED display and operation-oriented user interface
The high contrast, high response organic LED screen, viewable from wide angles ensures fluid operation in field recording situations. The high response of level meters makes precise level adjustments possible. All the necessary switches and knobs are located on the top and front panels. Self-lit buttons on all the key controls enable clear-cut recording operations.

Capture eight channels by linking two units
8ch_RECThe Control Sync terminal enables synchronized operation of 2 units. Control the second unit from the master by simply connecting two with a stereo mini cable. The master unit can remotely control REC standby, REC start and REC stop of the slave unit. This function enables 8-channel recording in a compact space and at an affordable price.

The R-44 storage can be mounted on computers with a simple USB 2.0 connection. It is seen as an USB storage device on any computer. You can copy data back and forth with a simple drag & drop operation.

Four hours of recording with four AA batteries
The R-44 can be operated with 3 types of power: AC adaptor, 4-pin external battery and AA batteries. Four hours* of operation is possible with NiMH or alkaline batteries.

- Can I simultaneously record analog and digital inputs with R-44?
"Yes. By selecting [Dig+Ana] for [Input Select] under [Recording Setup] of system configuration, signals from a digital device connected to the digital input connector and analog audio signals from a microphone or audio device connected to the XLR/TRS input connector are recorded simultaneously. In this case, the digital input audio is recorded on the channels 1 and 2. Use the channels 3 and 4 to record the analog audio. * Note [Dig+Ana] cannot be selected when the recording sampling frequency is 192kHz."

- Can I power on and off the phantom power supply of R-44 for each channel separately?
"Yes. The phantom power supply switches are provided separately for each channel. Note: Be sure to power off the phantom power supply unless a condenser microphone requiring it is connected. If you supply the phantom power supply to a dynamic microphone, it may get faulty. Refer to the manual of the microphone for its specifications. Reference: Phantom power supply specifications. - Can I start recording from an external device?
By connecting two R-44s via the SYNC CONTROL terminals, you can start and stop recording from the master R-44.

- How precise is the synchronization when two R-44s are connected via the CONTROL SYNC terminals?
"When two R-44s are connected via the CONTROL SYNC terminals, they share the audio clock. Therefore, delay due to time passing does not occur with recorded data. In addition, the operation information is also sent, and start and stop operations are also synchronized. However, there is a time lag between two R-44s and the recording start time can slightly differ. Reference: The clock synchronization jitter is 1000ppm or less. Difference of recording start time between two R-44s is approximately 10msec. If pre-recording is set, the time lag becomes larger. Because a time lag occurs with the recording star time as mentioned above, you need to use DAW or other tools to strictly align the phases after recording."

- Can I use R-44 with Oxyride cells?
"Use R-44 with alkaline or nickel-hydrogen cells. We do not recommend you use Oxyride cells for the following reasons. We also do not guarantee the normal operation if you use Oxyride cells. * The battery life is not different when using Oxyride cells and alkaline or nickel-hydrogen cells. * Oxyride cells may generate heat."

- Can I capture audio files recorded with R-44 to the DV-7DL series?
"Yes. You can connect R-44 and DV-7DL series via a USB cable to capture audio. Be sure to record audio in the following format to capture it to DV-7DL series. * Wave file, 16 bits, 44.1kHz, 48kHz * 24bit, 96kHz Notes: * The system program of DV-7DL series must be Version 1.010 or later. * You cannot capture a 24-bit and 96KHz audio file recorded with R-44 to DV-7DL series Version 2.001 or earlier. * If The system program of DV-7DL series is not Version 1.010 or later, contact the Roland ED Customer Support Center. - What should I care when handling cells?
"When not handling a cell, battery, and/or charger in a wrong way, leak, heat generation, fire, or explosion may occur. Read the manual of the a cell, battery, and charger thoroughly before using them and observe all the precautions. Be sure to use a battery and charger in a correct combination specified by the vendor."

- When R-44 is used with alkaline cells, how long does it run? Are there any other types of batteries which can be used with R-44?
"When used with eight AA alkaline cells, R-44 can continue playback and recording for approximately 4 hours. * 44.1kHz, 16bit, stereo, and phantom power supply powered off Note that this time varies depending on the use condition (whether the backlight and effects are used, environmental temperature, etc.). * Reference: You can also use nickel-hydrogen cells in addition to alkaline cells with R-44. When used with nickel-hydrogen cells, R-44 can continue playback and recording for approximately 5 hours. * 44.1kHz, 16bit, stereo, and phantom power supply powered on Note: * R-44 cannot charge nickel-hydrogen cells. - I want to play back 4 WAV files I have in my computer on the R-44. When I just copy them into the R-44, it doesn´t work. Why?
If you wish to copy WAV files onto your R-44 for playback, you need to do the following: - Note the Bit Depth and Sample Rate of your WAV files. - Edit your WAV files so they are all the same length and file size. They must be exactly the same. - Rename your WAV files. Four MONO WAV files should be renamed 1.wav, 2.wav, 3.wav, 4.wav. Two STEREO WAV files should be re-named 1.wav and 2.wav. - Set up your R-44 to record the proper format (MONOx4 for four mono WAV files, STEREOx2 for two stereo WAV files, etc) and make sure the record Bit Depth and Sample Rate match your WAV files. - Make a short recording (1-2 secs) on your R-44. - Connect your R-44 to your computer via USB. - Browse to the folder of the 1-2 sec project folder you just recorded. - Copy your 1.wav, 2.wav, etc files into that project folder. - Rename your newly recorded project folder, if you wish. It must retain the file type: filename.pjt. - Disconnect (or eject) the R-44 from your PC. - You can now play that project in your R-44.
